2019/2020 What We've Been Doing - Spring Term

Week Ending Friday 20th March

As we close to the majority of pupils today, the staff team would like to say thank you for supporting us over the last week and would like to wish you all the best in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, you should have received a home study pack. Each pack contains learning activities to do with your child. This is learning that has been previously taught in school and we would be recapping over the next few weeks. Research suggests that the way children remember and recall learning is by practising it regularly.

In the pack you will find a login to Purple Mash. This hosts an assortment of curriculum focused activities, creative tools, programs and games to support and inspire creative learning every day. We will be setting up some 2Dos over the next few days. These should appear as alerts when your child logs on, but feel free to explore all the activities.

Please look at our Home Learning pages to find daily tasks (for each school day) set by Miss Woodhouse and Miss Justice .

You will also find lots of useful websites that children can access so that they can learn whilst having fun.

Week Ending Friday 13th March 2020

Sycamore class went to the Learning Lounge on Tuesday 10th March. They created their own hedgehog corner bookmarks, and took part in a "hedgehog hunt". The children really enjoyed listening to the story "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt.

In art, we have been thinking about how we can add texture when drawing and sculpting. As part of our topic work we designed an eye for a mythical creature then created it using clay. This term the children have been learning all about the sculptor Antony Gormley and on Thursday they had fun completing a true/false statement quiz.

Take a look at our fantastic sculptures.

Week Ending Friday 6th March 2020

This year instead of celebrating books for one day, we are going to celebrate books for the whole week! This week, Year 2 are reading The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith and our learning will be focused around this book and it's author.

We visited the library in Bingham on Thursday. All the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the vast range of books available for them to borrow.

Photos of our spoon characters and hedgehog collages will follow.

Week Ending Friday 28th February 2020

We have been looking at the features of an invitation in English and writing our own invitations.

In DT we designed our own clay sculptures - an eye of a mythical creature. We thought about how we could change the clay with our hands and which tools we could use to add more detail to the clay.

Our maths learning this week has been all about fractions. Thinking about when we can have more than 0 but less than 1 - we can use fractions to tell us about these amounts.

This half term one of our PE sessions will be Drumba. The children have really enjoyed this energetic workout.

Week Ending Friday 14th February 2020

In our English lessons we have been looking at the story of Alice in Wonderland - the children learnt some new vocabulary that was unfamiliar to them and we matched each new word to it's meaning. We have been working hard on writing a character description of Alice, making sure we include lots of expanded noun phrases to make our writing interesting!

Over the last two weeks in maths we have been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We have had lots of fun exploring the shapes and testing whether 2D shapes are symmetrical or not. We have sorted both 2D and 3D shapes into groups depending on their properties. The children have worked so hard at being able to recall our shape vocabulary!

During internet safety week (this week) we have been discussing in our classes what to do if something appears on our computer screens and we have been learning about the importance of not sharing personal information online. We used the chrome books to safely copy and paste an image from Google to our habitats word document. The children have also been busy creating a 'SMART' internet safety poster.

Week Ending Friday 7th February 2020

This week in maths we continued to look at the properties of shapes. Friday 7th February was NSPCC Numbers Day so we spent the day participating in lots of different maths challenges. It was great to see the children using logic and their mathematical knowledge to problem solve.

In art we have been learning about the concept of sculpture. We have looked at sculptures by Antony Gormley such as The Angel of the North and Another Place located at Crosby Beech in Merseyside.

We have continued to develop our word processing skills in ICT, creating a Word document with a title and text box.

Week Ending Friday 31st January 2020

In maths we have used our knowledge of statistics to create a block graph. We have also been looking at the properties of shapes.

In English we have completed our descriptions of the factory setting and we're beginning to plan an alternative ending to the story.

In geography we have been looking at the varying habitats that can be found in different continents.

This week the children have used Microsoft Word to create a document with a title and a text box.

Photos to follow.

Week Ending Friday 24th January 2020

In English this week we have been focusing our learning around the clip below - origins. We discussed the clip, thought about what the character might say and we described the factory setting.

Please click on the clip below to play the video.

In science we have been looking at microhabitats (a microhabitat is a small specialized habitat within a larger habitat).

In our maths lessons this week we have been learning all about statistics.

Week Ending Friday 17th January 2020

In geography we have continued to add detail to our world map by labelling the world's five oceans.

In English our learning has been focused around the book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The children have thought about the text and discussed their opinions and enjoyed role playing the story. They've also created speech bubbles for the characters, and written a letter.

In maths we have used our knowledge of division to help us solve solve word problems.

In science we have been looking at different animal habitats. We have thought about how animals have adapted to different habitats.

Week Ending Friday 10th January 2020

Happy New Year and welcome back to school. We hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas and now we are looking forward to a happy and healthy 2020. The children have been eager to share what they have been doing over the Christmas holidays. It has been lovely to hear about the places they visited and the special people they have seen, as well as their favourite Christmas presents.

We have been learning about our new topic 'Mythical creatures'. We learnt what a myth is and described our own mythical creature and setting. We are really trying hard to use interesting vocabulary in our writing this half term. We shared our holiday homework, to create our own mythical creature, with a buddy. Thank you for helping your child complete this homework task.

This week Year 2 received a letter from Wendy (see below). After reading the letter the children were asked to think what might have happened.

Here is the letter Year 2 received!

The children were intrigued by what Wendy had told them. They went to our wild life area to investigate and to try to verify what they had been told. The children wrote questions for Wendy and thought about how she may have felt.

In science we have been thinking about how animals can be grouped - birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians and fish. Then we classified them by what they eat - carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In geography we have been labelling the world's seven continents on a map and created a map key.

This half term one of our PE sessions each week will be gymnastics. After half term Sycamore will have a Drumba session each week. The children really enjoy this energetic workout.

In maths we have been learning about division - looking at how we can divide by sharing objects equally.

Photos will follow.
