Spring Term

Spring Term

This term our topic focus will be 'Little explorers'.

We will be beginning our learning by meeting a 'little explorer' that quite enjoys a marmalade sandwich or two! Paddington will be inspiring us to create our own postcards to send to Aunt Lucy.

We will be learning all about the UK and the four different countries that unite together to make the United Kingdom. We will be identifying the four capital cities and the different famous landmarks in each city.

We will be then learning all about an explorer that set off on their own voyage (much like Paddington) to a very cold part of the world...Antarctica. We will be learning all about Captain Scott and his expedition to locate the south pole and his race to try and beat the Norwegians. We will learn about the weather in Winter and the different signs of winter during our forest school sessions.

Please take a look at our curriculum newsletter and curriculum pages for more information on what key knowledge is taught in each subject.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on our learning and photographs of the exciting times we have during spring term in Year 1.

The children will continue to access Continuous Provision throughout the term. It offers the children a constant environment that enables them to explore, develop independence and apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt in lesson time.

Paddington

We began our topic solving clues from a bag that had been delivered to our school. We had a train, a map of Peru, an orange, a postcard from London and a welly. We then had a big reveal of a brown leather suitcase marked with P.B and quickly realised that our first explorer was indeed...Paddington bear!

We have been learning all about the artist Robert Alley and how he is the illustrator for the Paddington bear books. We watched a video of how he created Paddington and the different mediums and tools he uses to draw Paddington. We then had a go ourselves.

We have been learning all about the UK in our geography lessons, identifying where the 4 countries of the UK are located on a map and naming and locating their capital cities. We then focused specifically on the landmarks within the capital city and learnt about some of the most famous ones.

The children were then asked to pretend that they were Paddington and they wrote a postcard to Aunt Lucy explaining what he had been doing whilst visiting London. They needed to ensure that they wrote in first person, used the suffix 'ed' and named some of the famous landmarks. They have all done a great job! I hope you enjoy reading them.

D & T - Making sandwiches

We designed our own sandwiches with our own choices of fillings. Once we had designed these, it was time to make them and then taste!

World Book Week - Making Instruments

We have been learning about the story 'Ossiri and the Bala Mengro' and her life as a traveller girl. Ossiri loves music but they don't have enough money to buy one so she decides to make her own out of recycled materials. She calls this a 'Tattin Django'. Cedar class thought carefully about what instrument they would like to make and designed this and then used a variety of recycled materials to make their own.

D & T - Making Rockets

We have been learning all about Neil Armstrong this term and why he is significant. As part of our D & T project, we needed to make a model that could support itself. We designed our own rockets, thinking carefully about the materials we would use, we then used recycled materials to make them. Once we made our rockets, we then needed to evaluate them and reflect on what went well and what could be improved.
