What did we learn about in Summer 1? (2024-25)

Our topic for Summer 1 is 'Famous authors - Julia Donaldson'. Please click the link below for more information about the topics.

Termly overview(details of the focus / key learning for each week).

We will read and explore lots of stories, such as The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale, Zog, Room on a Broom, Monkey Puzzle and Stickman. As part of our topic, we will learn through lots of exciting activities, such as:

Creating our own spells and making potions using things we find in the outside area.

Exploring the settings for different stories, using our wonderful outdoor environment.

Making our own stick characters and using them to retell and make up stories.

We will use the basic skills we are taught in Literacy and Maths to support our learning throughout the curriculum.

The above themes and ideas are starting points for the children’s learning. Where possible, we will plan activities based on the children’s interests and in response to our assessments and observations.

Important dates / events:

HALF TERM: Mon 26th May – Fri 30th May

Outdoor learning The Gruffalo

We enjoyed reading the Gruffalo story and making characters out of play dough. We then took our learning out to the Forest school area to think about which habitats the animals from the story would like. We also created habitats for other creatures and found evidence of the Gruffalo. We didn't see him though!

Stickman

Another of our favourite Julia Donaldson stories is Stickman. This gave us opportunities to create our own stick person. We added eyes, hair, arms and legs to make our stick person and took them on adventures outside. We retold the story using the characters we had made.

Room on the Broom

We enjoyed reading the story and creating our own potions. We took small cauldrons outdoors and worked with a partner to create the most wonderful mixtures. We used our imaginations to find unicorn breath, frog slime, sparkles, bat wings and lots of other things. We made our own wands and said spells to make the magic happen. Miss Wallis flew round the grounds on her broomstick. We also wrote down ingredients for our potions and thought about what they would make happen.

We had lots of fun!
